Yellow Fever Vaccination
Barton Lane Practice is able to offer Yellow Fever immunisation services.
About Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is a viral disease that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The yellow fever virus is found in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and South America.
When unwell with Yellow Fever, the illness ranges from a fever with aches and pains to severe liver disease with bleeding and yellowing skin (jaundice).
When a Yellow fever infection is suspected, it can be diagnosed with blood tests, however, there is no medicine to treat or cure the infection.
The risk of Yellow fever can be reduced by using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and getting vaccinated.
Getting vaccinated
1 dose of yellow fever vaccine is recommended for all people over 9 months of age who are travelling to an area with a risk of yellow fever virus transmission. This includes expatriates and people who are visiting friends and relatives.
An appointment may be booked with one of our nurses. You will be provided with information about the vaccination, and your travel plans will be reviewed. A doctor and a nurse will need to review your past medical history and allergies to check if there are reasons you should not be vaccinated for Yellow Fever.
Who cannot have a Yellow Fever Vaccination?
Not everyone can be vaccinated. You cannot be vaccination for Yellow Fever if you:
- have a thymus disorder (for example: myasthenia gravis, thymoma, thymectomy, DiGeorge syndrome)
- are immunosuppressed
- are under the age of 9 months
The Yellow Fever vaccine is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Adults aged over 60 years have a higher risk of severe adverse events after yellow fever vaccination than younger adults. If this applies to you, you should only receive a yellow fever vaccine if you intend to travel to countries where yellow fever is endemic.
